One in Blue, One in Pink

Same ID cards but in different colors. One in blue and one in pink. This actually is all the difference between men and women, but today in Turkey, women are being defined as woman not as a human. They are not recognised as a human by the people especially the men of Turkey. The main problem is that, women are not living equal lives with equal rights. Turkey is in the 125th place out of 142 countries in the world for sex equality.

Actually I made a mistake by naming as women, the people of the community are not categorizing them as women, they are categorizing them as ladies. Some men are afraid to pronounce the word woman because it  brings up to mind something about sex for them, so they name them in an artificial way as a lady to hide their real point of view which is about seeing a woman only as a sex object.

I wish this was the only problem that the women of Turkey are facing today, but unfortunately it is only a small bit. As I mentioned before the men think that they are superior, more qualified and more prestigious than their ladies. It may look that way from an overall point of view because the women are not given the chance of being qualified. The men in Turkey think that the only thing that a woman is capable of doing is taking care of her children, cooking, cleaning and pleasing her husband. Each four of the five people that don’t know how to read-write are women in Turkey. Some of the lucky ones have the chance to have a good education and get a job, but we still have some problems in that point. Ladies are not given challenging duties in their working areas and it keeps them away from being qualified at that job. That’s why only 2.9% of the mayors are women and  only 14.7% of the ministers are women in Grand National Assembly of Turkey. This means that women don’t have enough chance to represent themselves in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey .It’s looks hard to find a solution to change the position of women in Turkey, but the only light we can see may be by  educating women.

There is a patriarchal  system in Turkey. Men have a strong belief that they have the right to do what ever they want and the women have to obey them .Quite a number of women are facing violence coming from men which affects them both physically and psychologically. This also affects the coming generations and makes them normalize the act of violence against women by seeing it constantly repeated in their families. It is a cycle that is hard to break, but still it can be broken by the strong hands of good education.

The key for both of these problems is to educate women. When women get educated, they will no longer have to stay at home and do housework, but they will have a real job and earn their own money. In that way they won’t have depend on their husbands and they will have the right to rule their own lives. By time the amount of women leaders in big companies and women ministers in Grand National Assembly of Turkey will increase and there will have the power to make their voice be heard by all members of the community. In time men will hopefully believe in the fact that women can do everything they do and men and women are  equal and they have the same rights in every field of life. Even though it looks as Turkey is locked up in this situation, it  can be unlocked  by the golden key called education.
